Whitestone (Lee)
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 4th Jan 2015

Whitestone (Lee) submitted by theCaptain on 4th Jan 2015. I found a place to park and got out for a look, and there was the large white quartz stone, stood in the paddock just above the roadside.
It's probably about 8 to 10 feet tall, and cannot be seen from the nearby roadside due to the thick hedge, but it can be seen (in winter anyway) from further up the hillside

Log Text: Visited while on walk across Dartmoor on the Lich Way Easter 1988. Walked right by Beardown Cairn and Cist, on the heights between the Cowsic and West Dart rivers. My friend Antony tries out the cist for size. It certainly was the start of a funny event. It was very damp down the bottom of the cist. Sometime later along the walk towards Wistman's Wood, Antony was bringing up the rear, and it was noticed he was walking along with his trousers round his neck, hoping for them to dry out in the sun, wondering how long it would be until anyone noticed... However, we later all ended trouserless with very wet and mucky lower limbs, due to a bog near the Powder Mills.

Challacombe Cross Settlement submitted by TheCaptain on 5th Mar 2017. A photo of what I have called Shapley Common Hut, taken during a walk at Easter 1988.
I dont believe this would be at the location given on the Portal sitepage, but more to the northeast, around SX697830, as our walk first took us south along the ridge to Hookney Tor and Grimspound

Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 12th Feb 2019
Fernworthy Cairn 4 submitted by TheCaptain on 12th Feb 2019. The first monument to look for, which you might otherwise miss is cairn 4, found right at the corner of forest, trackway and open area. Probably about 10 metres in diameter, the centre of the cairn is green and rocky, and there are several kerbstones making up a circular surround.

Fernworthy stone row SE
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 12th Feb 2019
Fernworthy stone row SE submitted by TheCaptain on 12th Feb 2019. The southeastern stone row is short and of small stones, hard to tell whether it is a single or a double row with little space between the two rows.
The northern terminus of the row has a cairn, but there is nothing obvious of the southern terminus, with just 20m of stones to be seen.

Log Text: Cranbrook Castle hillfort can be seen to the northwest of Butterdon Down. I decide that with it only being February, and with it getting dark by 5:00pm, I will not visit, but go for a pint in the Union Inn at Moretomhampstead before heading out to Houndtor.

Log Text: Being such a beautiful day, I walk up to the top of Butterdon Hill, much of which is covered in Gorse, and it’s a bit of a struggle to get to the actual top the way I have approached it. Once on top, it is obvious that there are remains of several cairns up here, and many more of the ancient boundary type constructions, some of which also have large side set slabs within them. The views from up here are fabulous, and its like being up here on a summer day rather than in February. The sky is all a bit hazy, and its obvious there are several fires burning, I suspect from burning of the gorse and bracken.
The Giant's Grave Mardon Down
Date Added: 28th Sep 2020
Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 26th Feb 2019. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 3
The Giant's Grave Mardon Down submitted by TheCaptain on 6th Mar 2019. At the top of Mardon Down is a fairly large cleared area, but the Giant's Grave cairn is very disappointing, being not much more than a large bumpy area of ground of about 20m diameter. It certainly doesn't live up to its name.
