Ringmoor Down stone circle submitted by TheCaptain on 31st May 2013. "restored" in 1909, supposedly not very accurately, some of the stones used were probably not original, and just found nearby.

Ringmoor Down Cairn 4

Ringmoor Down Cairn 4 submitted by TheCaptain on 30th May 2013. marked on the OS map as enclosure, is likely the remains of a fairly large ring cairn of 35 metres diameter. It is not easy to find, although given the right conditions, the central area can be seen to be flattened off from the basic moor.

Ringmoor Down Cairn 3

Ringmoor Down Cairn 3 submitted by TheCaptain on 23rd May 2013. Ringmoor Down Cairn 3 does not look entirely convincing to me. It consists of a circle of fairly small stones of which only one or two are earthfast. There are no obvious cairn remains within this circle. Viewed here looking northwest

Ringmoor Down Cairn 1 submitted by TheCaptain on 29th May 2013. The 10 metre diameter Cairn 1 is about 100m east of Brisworthy stone circle. Not much is to be seen these days, just 4 or 5 dark stones of its surrounding kerb seemingly laying around the egde of a darker patch of grass.

Rillaton Barrow submitted by thecaptain on 24th Oct 2009. The chamber is halfway up the eastern side, in a separate depression of its own, and cannot be seen as you pass, so I suspect most people who pass this way do not realise it is there.

Log Text: This fine male statue-menhir is to be found through the hamlet of Rieuviel, about 100 metres beyond the last house, and always bearing to the right. He is concreted in to a little plinth, and makes a sort of entrance to the lane with a cross mounted on the other side. Unfortunately, the poor chap is being used as a fence post, and the wire fence is scratching and degrading this 5000 year old stone.

It stands about 1.7 metres tall, and the engravings on the front are superb, and very clear. He has a full face, arms (with fingers), collar piece, belt with buckle, legs (with toes). I could not make out what weapons he carries, and the back is not clear. He really is a fine fellow, and should not be treated in the poor way that he is. He and his female neighbour need better looking after.

Rieuviel statue menhir 1 submitted by TheCaptain on 19th Nov 2010. The front face of this little female statue menhir. With it being in shadowm the carvings are difficult to make out, but her belt and collars can just about be made out.

Log Text: This beautiful little stone, only 1.2 metres tall, is easily found on a bit of land being used by the road mending gang as a parking place for their machinery when I visited, just at the entry to the hamlet of Rieuviel. Unfortunately, the stone seems in much danger here, with cars and machinery parked all around it, and it needs better protection.

Although I was here in bright mid day sunlight from behind the stone, the engravings could clearly be seen, and this is a feminine statue. Face, necklaces, breasts, arms, belt can be seen on the front, and hair on the back. Disappointingly, her legs have broken off at some time. She really needs better looking after than this. I'll take her in !

Log Text: This museum is in a glorious little spot in the woods beside the Lac du Lauzas, to the south of Nages. It is linked with a leisure centre with a park and beach, and all sorts of activities to do. As part of the museum, there are several statue menhirs included, some in the grounds outside the building.

Ridgeway

Ridgeway submitted by TheCaptain on 28th Feb 2005. The Ridgeway near to Waylands Smithy after sunset, February 2005, showing just what a terrible state it has been turned into. Thankfully it was all frozen, and so walking along it wasnt too problematical. Those who insist on driving their 4WD vehicles all over everything say they are not destroying things, and that walkers, mountain bikers and horses cause as much destruction. I'll let the viewer be the judge.

Rhyd Wen Fach

Rhyd Wen Fach submitted by TheCaptain on 10th Sep 2017. With a bit of an optimistic eye, I could make out what might be an arc of stones probably with an approx. 15 m diameter, but it may well have been no more than my wanting to see something. Looking towards the climb up to the summit of Fan Foel. Twr-y-Fan Foel to the left.

Log Text: Visited while walking round the Carmarthen Fan loop, just at the foot of the hard climb up to Fan Foel. We had ended up not following the expected ridgetop path, but a trail a bit below the top to the southwest, so I had to head over and back downhill a few hundred yards as San slowly ascended the steep ridge. I had a quick look round, aided by using my GPS, and soon found the large stones Sem has posted photos of, but there was nothing obvious else to see of a circle. There are many stones around, and what is natural and what has been positioned is anyone’s guess. With a bit of an optimistic eye, I could make out what might be an arc of stones probably with an approx. 15 m diameter, but it may well be no more than wanting to see something. To me it wasn't a very likely place to find a stone circle, the ground here being too steep. Since returning I notice the RCAHM gives a ref of SN 8223 2312, a further 50 metres to the north of where I was looking, which would have been slightly flatter, but more peaty and boggy ground. I wasn’t going to spend long here, as I was getting left behind, and I didn't want Sandra to be climbing up that steep ridge on her own, especially as the heavens were just about to open with a very cold and heavy squall. The climb up the ridge was very hard work as we are not as young as we were, but just taking it a few steps at a time, and not rushing, I eventually made it up to meet San sat sheltering behind a boulder in her green Kermit cape, we were by then both soaked! Once up at the top, what a fabulous feeling of achievement, and the weather improved a bit to give breath taking views. It really was indeed well worth the effort.

Log Text: I found nowhere to stop near here on the horribly busy road with everyone rushing home from work in St Nazaire. However, I don’t let it beat me that easily, and eventually found somewhere to stop and wallk back to where the dolmen is marked on the map. Once I got there, I could see no way into the field, but could see lots of stones in a heap on top of a mound.
