Log Text: Visit after a cycling weekend in Purbeck. I remember it being difficult to get into the wood to look at the stones, but once in there seeing a lot of stones seemingly littered around, with a few standing making a part of a small circle near to the road. Once known where it was, seeing one or two stones from the road as passing was possible, with one nice large stone stood at the edge of the woodland. Some of the stones had coins inserted into crevices.

Log Text: A quick look during a weekend in Purbeck. I found about 8 or 9 stones in the woods at the side of the road, probably in a circular shape, mostly well overgrown with brambles and ferns, with no way of telling what was really there, and could not see more than two stones at a time! Many of the stones had coins placed on them. A bit further along was a sort of stone setting, perhaps once part of an avenue, of which there was no way of telling whether ancient or some sort of stone clearance.

Log Text: Walking up from Penmaenmawr, once up on the plateau, the first site I see is the Red Farm stone circle. Its over a wall in a field containing horses, and there are lots of people out looking like they are on an organised shooting event, so I satisfy myself with the view over the wall. Looks like about 4 stones on a flattened platform, with a couple of other either outliers or moved stones laying around.

Randwick Long Barrow submitted by thecaptain on 13th Apr 2009. On the left of the picture here, at the northeastern end of the barrow, are the remains of a horned entrance with forecourt and a single stone lined chamber.
Remains of this chamber are supposedly still to be seen, but the barrow is heavily overgrown here, making any stone remains invisible to me when I visited.

Log Text: This massive Long Barrow is to be found within Standish Wood, at the top of the hills to the north of Stroud. The remaining mound is about 55 metres in length, up to half as wide, and still 4 metres in height. At the northeastern end are the remains of a horned entrance with forecourt and a single stone lined chamber. Remains of this chamber are supposedly still to be seen, but the barrow is heavily overgrown, making any stone remains invisible to me when I visited.
The barrow is set right on the hilltop, and almost surrounded by various quarrying and pits, some of which may date back almost as long as the barrow itself. Positioned within this thick Cotswold woodland, the place is very atmospheric, and supposedly a much more authentic setting than those barrows in open fields.
A bit further on in the woods to the northeast are a couple of other round barrows, and a crossdyke.
From Stroud, take the road north towards Randwick, and follow it up the hill, taking the little lane to the left when almost at the hilltop. There is a small parking area here, and a well maintained trackway north into the woods, from where the barrow is only a few hundred metres distant.

Log Text: To the west of Summeray, a couple of kilometres along the D.28 road you will find Quincampoix farm. Fenced off in a field to the south of the road can be seen the remains of the Quincampoix dolmen, about 80 metres distance. There is no direct access to the stones, and indeed there are notices to keep people out. There are quite a few stones here amongst the horses, of what was obviously quite a substantial dolmen in the past.

Quélarn dolmens submitted by thecaptain on 10th Dec 2006. Part of the informative noticeboard at this interesting site, showing the details of these Compartmented Dolmens.
Much of the siteplan can be seen, although I have chopped off the right hand end.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: The Quélarn dolmens are fairly easily found as they are signposted a couple of kilometres to the west of Plobannalec, and they have their own little parking space and picnic area. Although mostly destroyed in the middle ages when it was used as a quarry, this massive site has been excavated and restored, and got an explanatory noticeboard. These have been dated to the middle neolithic.
These are a type of monument only found in this coastal part of southwest Brittany, and are compartmented dolmens, which had massive chambers with internal compartment slabs to break up the chamber into sections, and to hold up the roof. This was all once a massive monument in a 50 metre long mound, running east to west, with six of the compartmented chambers within it, all facing to the south, as opposed to the other two I have seen previously. The basic layout of the structure can be seen, but only the large side slabs remain, making a sort of ground plan. Only one capstone remains in place for the whole thing. Some of the chambers would have been massive. The largest one at the west measures about 10 metres by 8 metres rectangular, and is more like a 9 roomed house than a burial chamber !
It is nice to see it all kept clear of undergrowth and presented like this, but the mechanical clearance cutters used are damaging the stones, many of which have been scraped and cracked by the cutters.
Quebec ice dolmen

Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: Canada
Visited: Yes on 22nd Dec 2009

Quebec ice dolmen submitted by theCaptain on 22nd Dec 2009. Each year in February, the wonderful city of Québec holds a massive winter carnival, the Carnaval de Québec. Among the many events and festivities is an ice sculpture competition, with entries from around the whole world.
The year I visited, 1989, amongst all of the various ice carvngs and sculptures, there was a massive ice dolmen, made I believe by some Breton people. I could not of course, pass it by without taking a photograph.

Log Text: They sell postcards of this menhir, and it looks massive. I found Puy Durand, and had a good look all around, but could not find any signs of the menhir. There are lots of private and fenced off areas here, so the menhir is probably inside one of these.
