Log Text: A cold grey February afternoon walk out onto the moor to visit the Harbourne Head menhir. It’s a nice pointy topped stone, slightly taller than me and leaning to one side. Some swaling going on nearby, but not close to the stone and doesn't prevent me getting a visit.

Log Text: Walk north over Merripit Hill and on via Stannon Newtake to look for this cairn with cist, which is easily found. The cist is a bit overgrown and I can only see one side of it, but the surrounding semi circle of large stones is in fine condition.

White Ridge cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 30th May 2022. There is clearly a cairn up on top of White Ridge, given away not only by the green stony circle amongst all the pale strawgrass which is everywhere else, but it also has a hollow in the centre, where it has clearly been dug in the past.
There are all around views, here looking southeast.

Log Text: After a quick drink on the cairn of the stone row, I head up onto the top of White Ridge for lunch with views all around. There are a few storms blowing in, but thankfully they all avoided me. There is clearly a cairn up here, given away not only by the green stony circle amongst all the pale strawgrass which is everywhere else, but it also has a hollow in the centre, where it has clearly been dug in the past.

Log Text: After lunch on the top of White Ridge, I head westwards through some remnants of ancient settlements and a couple of cairns and down to the East Dart to find the Beehive Hut. The settlement remains are very sparse and scattered, but would no doubt show some form from the air. I found the cairn at the second attempt it again clearly showing as a green stony circle, no obvious hollow in the centre, but perhaps some remains of a stone surround.

Log Text: Getting down from White Ridge to the river and Beehive Hut is a bit tricky finding the way through the gorse here where it is very rough and largely overgrown, but once down it was easy to find. A splendid little construction and seeing it makes me think I have been here before, possibly on one of those mega expeditions in the 1980's, or perhaps I am confusing it with some of the similar orries in the Ariege Pyrénées. I see my only other person out here on the moors today, well camouflaged and fishing in the Dart, no doubt illegally as he looks very sheepish and hesitant to say hello.

Log Text: I now try to walk south from the Beehive Hut along the marked bridleway beside the Dart, but its hard going, very rough and largely overgrown, I find it to be much easier higher up on the moorland. South over the top of Hartland Tor with good views south towards Bellever Tor and Roundy Park settlement clear on the other side of the river. Onwards down to the Dart again, through the Hartyland estate to Postbridge, having a look at the old clapper bridge before getting a pint of Jail Ale in the welcoming East Dart Hotel bar.

Log Text: With the drought of 2022 now exposing the stone circle in Tottiford reservoir for only the second time in 150 years, I went down for an exploration. Despite overnight storms making the lakebed very wet, slippery and muddy, I was able to walk to the circle, and around most of it.
In the southern part of the reservoir, below the footpath causeway bridge and to the northwest of the obvious lage dry mound, can be seen a few stones of a stone circle. I was able to get across the mud to the nearest stone, and once there it seemed that the circle was arranged around the outer edges of another smaller dry mound. I got to walk around most of the circumference of the circle without too much mud, and noted about 8 to 10 stones, which would have made up a decent circle with regularly spaced stones.
Trying to get across to the large dry mound I had no chance, as there was deep wet mud between the two, presumably an old river course separating the two, so I had to go back the way I had come across the mud from the eastern shore of the reservoir.
Despite getting very wet and muddy feet, and slipping several times, I managed to make it back to dry land without falling flat in the mud! I was really pleased with myself for getting to visit this circle, as I never thought I would even see it, let alone be able to have a proper visit.

Log Text: To the east of the mound, between it and the eastern shore, can be seen several round piles of stones, which may be ancient cairns, but I am not too convinced, as they look neither big enough, and seem strangely spaced and positioned in what would have been a wet position. There seemes to be a fairly regularly spaced row of these stone piles along much of the eastern shoreline. Watching the Time Team program later and they showed that these were more likely relatively modern stone piles, possibly something to do with when the reservoir was being created.

Log Text: In the southern part of the reservoir, is an obvious large mound, which is all sandy rather than dark mud covered. No doubt this has been some form of island at some time. To the northeast of this mound is the remains of a stone sircle, and then further away a single stone row. To the south of the mound, which is elongated in this direction, can be seen remains of a double stone row extending further south into the waters of the lake. To the east of the mound, between it and the eastern shore, can be seen several round piles of stones, which may be ancient cairns, but I am not too convinced, as they look neither big enough, and seem strangely spaced and positioned in what would have been a wet position. Watching the Time Team program later and theyfound much mesolithic flint on the mound, suggesting it had been in use for millennia.

Log Text: With the drought of 2022 now exposing the stone circle in Tottiford reservoir for only the second time in 150 years, I went down for an exploration. In the southern part of the reservoir, below the footpath causeway bridge, can be seen a single row of stones progressing across the muddy lakebed in a westerly direction from the eastern shore. About 50 metres in length, several regularly spaced large stones can be seen. Trying to get close to the main part of the row, and to walk along its length proved futile, as the mud was very deep and wet. I saw nothing which really resembled a terminal cairn.

To the south of the mound, which is elongated in this direction, can be seen remains of a double stone row extending further south into the waters of the lake. It was too wet and muddy for me to get to any of the obviously remaining stones, and the water level of the reservoir was such that some of the stones were surrounded by water, and more could be seen further south and running below the water level. What stones I could see looked regularly spaced. On the sloping lakeshore, there are many large stones laying around, of which I have no doubt many have been removed here from the stone rows.

Log Text: Walk from Ponsworthy up and over Corndon Hill, taking in the money pit, Sharp Tor and Dr Blackall's ride, stopping for lunch at the Tavistock Inn. At the top of the northern summit, east west across the top, are two large cairns about 20 to 25 metres diameter, both of which have been mutilated by previous visitors to make crude shelters. There is an ancient reave running across the hill, and I thought I saw signs of a possible row emanating from the northwestern side of the eastern cairn but we weren't hanging around this grey cold windy day, so I didn't spend any time having a proper look.

Log Text: Walk from Hound Tor over the top and down to the deserted medieval village in a dip on the eastern side of the Tor. This started in the bronze age, but the remains to be seen these days are from the medieval period. The remains include several longhouses and other buildings which are really fascinating to wander around, trying to figure out what was what.

Log Text: Walk up and over the hilltop, then go and have a proper look at Bowerman's Nose, a really fabulous rock outcrop, said to represent the giant hunter turned to stone by a coven of witches. Lots of photo opportunities here!

At the top of the main, southern summit, is a granite tor surrounded by masses of cairn material. About 50 metres to the north is another large cairn, which also encompasses a granite outcrop. Both are about 25 metres diameter. To the west of the tor top cairn are several edge set slabs in a line, which may have once formed part of a stone row up here. Butler states that it is possible that these are the remains of a double stone row. Crossing recorded an unfound treble stone row somewhere in the region, with a double stone row not far off. As for the northern summit, we weren't hanging around this grey cold windy day, so I didn't spend any time having a proper look.

Rippon Tor submitted by AngieLake on 19th Oct 2007. Having just puffed my way up the side of the tor (!), this is the first view of the Cairn that Butler calls 'C1' from the west side. In the centre of the pile of stones is a modern Trig. station. (The height of Rippon Tor is 473m.)

Log Text: The forecast is for a cold icy but bright sunny day as we pack up and leave Splash Cottage, so I decide for a walk up to Rippon Tor and around before the journey home. Unfortunately the real weather up there means I am in the clouds and fog. I make the effort to climb the tor, but its freezing fog up there, and can't see more than about 25 metres, so have a quick wander to the hilltop cairns, cross and millstone, then back down to the car via an old boundary cross at the edge of the frozen Blackslade Mire.

Log Text: Driving back to the cottage from Postbridge, thought I'd have a quick look for the remains of this cairn circle and cist, although I didn't have any details with me and no phone signal. It's not very accurately marked on the OS map I had with me, but I had a walk alonside the river in the boggy ground but it was getting dark and I could find nothing. Reading up on it when home, and its up on the slope somewhere.
