Log Text: Having failed to get dinner at The Barge Inn, we got sandwiches in Marlborough, and then went and sat up on top of WKLB to eat them in the lovely sunshine, overlooking Silbury Hill and Avebury. Its lovely up here. But, there are always nutters about, banging drums, dowsing, tealights etc. What a shame the place has to put up with this.

Log Text: Up the hill across the fields to West Kennet longbarrow. Its bright and clear but very windy up here, which gives good views all around. A steady stream of people are coming up here for a look, but not enough to get in the way. As I suspect is often the case, there is quite a bit of tat and suchlike inside, put there by people who should know better.

West Kennet Avenue polisher

West Kennet Avenue polisher submitted by TheCaptain on 30th Sep 2019. Down near the bottom of the stone, facing the fence and road, can be seen one fairly large polishing dish and some smaller grooves, perhaps arrow sharpening grooves. The polishing surfaces are unfortunately in the shadows of this lovely sunny evening.

Log Text: One of the West Kennet Avenue stones on the eastern side near to the road about mid way along the remaining avenue, has evidence of being used as a polisher stone. Down near the bottom of the stone, facing the fence and road, can be seen one fairly large polishing dish and some smaller grooves, perhaps arrow sharpening grooves. As the polishing bowl would have probably been used flat so that water could be kept in the bowl to aid the polishing process, this would suggest that the stone was raised at a later date to become part of the Avenue.

Log Text: Down to the bottom of Waden Hill and now head up the West Kennet Avenue towards Avebury. Its stones are positively glowing in the afternoon sunshine. This is obviously the way to approach Avebury, and even a herd of bullocks in the enclosure couldn't deter me from walking all the way up, although I did divert to the top of the area to avoid most of them, which meant not seeing the stone with the polishing grooves again. At the top of the Avenue, cross the road and enter the enormous henge through the entrance portal with the beautiful trees and enormous Barber Stone, which I make sure I get a sit down on. The stones of the inner circle are glowing in the bright sunshine, as I decide to go for a pint in the Red Lion.

Wendron South

Wendron South submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Nov 2002. Wendron / Nine Maidens Stone Circles SW683365 Parking in layby on the west side of the road opposite the footpath. The path was heavily rutted by cattle, indicating that if it was wet, this would be extremely boggy. Access is over a low point in the wall right next to the stones. Next time I visit I must read the guide books beforehand - two of the stones are actually set in the wall! One still in its original place, the other moved. The field was high with dock when I visited, and had to ...

Log Text: Decide on a visit to the Wendron Nine Maidens on the way back to Penzance from Falmouth. Its been swelteringly hot and sunny all day, but just as I was getting up the hill to the site, it was all covered in a mist blowing down from the north. Easily found are 4 evenly spaced stones in the southern field, and one extra incorporated in the hedge at the place where it is easy to get over.

Log Text: Now home, I remember being here before 20 years ago and seeing the two stones in the wall nearer to the house, but I didn't look in the right place this time, but it was rather overgrown. However, at the far side of the northern field is a stone standing proud of the wall. A closer look and it can be seen to be a stander, just beside the wall which curves around beside it, like they often do down here. This suggests to me that it has always been here, so not as I originally thought a moved stone from one of the circles, but more likely an outlier. I remember seeing this and thinking just the same all those years ago. There are also two likely candidates now making the gateposts to the field over the road.
