Log Text: Probably what was under that tree and those bushes in the lump in the middle of the field where I was trying to find the menhir.

Log Text: From Siran, follow the signs to the Curiosité de L'Auriol, which takes you on a windy road north up onto the hills. The Curiosité is a weird bit of road where things seem to roll uphill - a trick of the eye over gravity. From here take the road left for half a kilometre to a big house (being done up in 2005) in amongst pine trees, and go beyond this to a track down to the left. Follow this track, and turn right at the junction with the trackway from the big house, then after a couple of hundred metres, the Grand dolmen de Lauriol is obvious at the left of the path.

Its a bit of a wreck, and becoming overgrown, but the 4m by 2m chamber, still within a mound of stones, is worth a look. The large capstone is now broken and fallen off to the side. This seems a good candidate for a bit of restoration. There are beautiful views from up here on the southern edge of the Montagne Noire.

Dolmen de Lauriol 2

Trip No.205  Entry No.108  Date Added: 9th Nov 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Languedoc:Hérault (34))
Visited: Couldn't find on 15th Sep 2005

Log Text: Nearby to the Grand dolmen de Lauriol are supposedly two more, smaller and more degraded dolmens. I had a good look around, but much of the land round here has been recently fenced off and I could find nothing obvious amongst the prickly scrub and undergrowth.

Dolmen de Laverré

Trip No.204  Entry No.150  Date Added: 17th Aug 2020

Visited: Couldn't find on 20th Jul 2005

Dolmen de Laverré

Dolmen de Laverré submitted by TheCaptain on 4th Dec 2007. This dolmen is a kilometre or so to the south of the village of Andillé, and can be found in the round wooded area behind the lone house to the northwest of the road.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Most of the fields around here have a bunch of bushes in the middle of them. I went over to two, but they both looked just like field clearance piles. There wasn't anywhere to properly park, nor to turn round and go back to where I think the dolmen must be, so I missed this one. I must try harder.

Dolmen de Laverré

Trip No.204  Entry No.156  Date Added: 17th Aug 2020

Dolmen de Laverré

Dolmen de Laverré submitted by TheCaptain on 4th Dec 2007. A single capstone sits on top of the chamber, made with two sidestones each side, two backstones and a single stone at the east end, where the entrance is.

Log Text: This dolmen is a kilometre or so to the south of the village of Andillé, and can be found in the round wooded area behind the lone house to the northwest of the road. The wooded area is perhaps the remains of a tumulus surrounding the dolmen, which is a nicely made rectangular dolmen. A single capstone sits on top of a 3.5m by 2.5 m chamber, made with two sidestones each side, two backstones and a single stone at the east end, where the entrance is. This is a nice find, especially after missing it twice yesterday.

Dolmen de Loubressac

Trip No.205  Entry No.15  Date Added: 14th Oct 2020

Dolmen de Loubressac

Dolmen de Loubressac submitted by thecaptain on 19th Feb 2006. At the hamlet of Loubressac, the little road curves around the remains of this dolmen. The capstone, which once would have measured 5 metres by 4 metres, has now broken and collapsed into the chamber.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Beside the river Goberté to the west of Lussac-les-Chateaux, at the hamlet of Loubressac, the little road curves around the remains of this dolmen. It is now sitting right beside the road at the edge of a pond. The capstone, which once would have measured 5 metres by 4 metres, has now broken and collapsed into the chamber. About 8 or 10 support stones remain, many of which have fallen. The entrance is to the east. Most of the stones are of the local white limestone, with holes and depressions everywhere, but the large support stone at the back of the chamber is a dark granite rock.

Unfortunately there is a telephone inspection cover right beside the dolmen which detracts. While here there was a helicopter flying very low overhead, perhaps checking on the overhead power lines.

Log Text: Driving along a little lane to the north of Bois-del-Rey dolmens, I saw a little sign to dolmen, and so just had to follow it. A few hundred metres down a track into the forest from the small lane (with difficult parking) can be found the remains of this little dolmen, not much more than 2 metres long by 1.2 metres wide. There is still a bit of its surrounding mound remaining.

Dolmen de Mane Rohr

Trip No.203  Entry No.366  Date Added: 11th May 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))
Visited: Couldn't find on 12th Jun 2005

Dolmen de Mane Rohr

Dolmen de Mane Rohr submitted by Martin_L on 31st Jan 2009. Dolmen de Mane Rohr at dusk in May 2001. It is an absolutely terrific site, but somewhat overgrown. In 2001 it was possible to cross a sports ground and then follow a narrow track through a little "jungle". It is not signposted, but if you are in this area you should buy the 1:25000 map anyway :-)

Log Text: Despite being clearly marked on the map, besides the sports ground and with a footpath to it, I could find no way through the houses to the hilltop position in the real world.

Dolmen de Marcilly

Trip No.204  Entry No.302  Date Added: 12th Sep 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Centre:Indre-et-Loire (37))
Visited: Yes on 11th Aug 2005. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 3

Dolmen de Marcilly

Dolmen de Marcilly submitted by TheCaptain on 20th Aug 2011. The dolmen is a fairly simple thing, with a single capstone sat on top of three support stones It's all leaning a bit these days.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This was not an easy dolmen to get to, as my campervan wouldn’t go under a low railway bridge, and hence I had a walk of over a kilometre. It's hard to explain, but once under the railway I just followed the field edges hoping to see something, and there it was, beyond a copse and a pond.

The dolmen is a fairly simple thing, with a single capstone sat on top of three support stones, making a rectangular chamber of 3m by 2.5m. Whether there was ever any more to it or not I don't know. It's all leaning a bit these days, and sat on a little mound. Nice. I thought I wouldn't get this one.

Dolmen de Méarzenne

Trip No.203  Entry No.321  Date Added: 29th Apr 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))
Visited: Couldn't find on 9th Jun 2005

Log Text: I had a long walk around the coastal path here, after parking the campervan for the night, but I could not find a way to access the wood within which this dolmen lives, as there are lots of big holiday homes and houses with big fenced gardens surrounding it all.

Dolmen de Men-Gouarec

Trip No.204  Entry No.30  Date Added: 6th Jul 2020
Site Type: Passage Grave Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))
Visited: Saw from a distance on 11th Jul 2005. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3

Dolmen de Men-Gouarec

Dolmen de Men-Gouarec submitted by Ogham on 8th Jul 2011. Passage grave at Mein Gouarec, it is well sign posed and the farmer has ensured it is accessable even when crops are growing
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This allée couverte with carved breasts on the back stone is signposted from miles around, and with its own little parking place and signpost. However, when I visited, I was not able to reach it as the farmer has a crop of sweetcorn growing all around it and there was absolutely no way through. this is not supposedly allowed, a pathway should have been kept clear, but what can I do about it ?

Dolmen de Men-Milliget

Trip No.203  Entry No.510  Date Added: 27th May 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Bretagne:Finistère (29))
Visited: Yes on 20th Jun 2005. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4

Dolmen de Men-Milliget

Dolmen de Men-Milliget submitted by theCaptain on 4th Feb 2012. It's chamber is made with a large backstone and two side slabs, with remains of other stones, but it is partially buried in the dunes.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Men Milliget or the St Gonvel dolmen is a pleasant little dolmen living on the landward side of a headland sticking out into the ocean. It's 3 metre by 2 metre chamber is made with a large backstone and two side slabs, with remains of other stones, but it is partially buried in the dunes. The strangely shaped capstone is known as Men Milliget (Roche Maudite, Bad rock).

Dolmen de Menez-Veil

Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Bretagne:Finistère (29))
Visited: Yes on 17th Jun 2005. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 2 Access 5

Dolmen de Menez-Veil

Dolmen de Menez-Veil submitted by thecaptain on 10th Dec 2006. The Dolmen de Menez-Veil can be found right by the roadside near a roundabout at the entrance to the village of Lesconil, on a little tended grassy area. It looks like it might be somebodies garden.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Rue Jules Ferry dolmen is a strange one. There's a little capstone sitting at a funnyangle on three support stones, on top of a stone mound, which is sort of walled in and held together by stone slabs around the outside. I can only assume that it's all been very rearranged at some point. It can be found right by the roadside near a roundabout at the entrance to the village of Lesconil, on a little tended grassy area. It looks like it might be somebodies garden.

Dolmen de Nauterio

Trip No.203  Entry No.390  Date Added: 14th May 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))
Visited: Yes on 13th Jun 2005. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4

Dolmen de Nauterio

Dolmen de Nauterio submitted by Charmot on 9th Sep 2008. On the map of Carnac, it 's call Dolmen Notério. It is difficult to find, lost in a forest on the dirt road between the dolmen Keriaval and Tumulus of Crucuny.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is a pleasant little dolmen, sadly becoming very overgrown, which can be found about 50 metres up the track which leads northwest beyond Nauterio towards Keriaval. It has a 2.5 by 2 metre chamber, with a 6 to 7 metre entrance passageway which has a couple of its capstones still in place.

The French Aeronavale are playing overhead in their Super Etendards.

Dolmen de Palus

Trip No.203  Entry No.63  Date Added: 5th Apr 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Aquitaine:Dordogne (24))
Visited: Yes on 17th May 2005. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 5

Dolmen de Palus

Dolmen de Palus submitted by theCaptain on 17th Jan 2011. In a field just beside the country lane from Douchapt to Ségonzac, near the hamlet of Margot, can be found the remains of this dolmen.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: In a field of Barley just beside the country lane from Douchapt to Ségonzac near the hamlet of Margot can be found the remains of this dolmen. Its not much more than a collection of four large brownish black rocks which I would guess are a capstone and three fallen supports. There’s still enough room underneath for the local wildlife to enjoy its shelter despite being ploughed right up to the stones.

Dolmen de Pech Grillé

Trip No.203  Entry No.205  Date Added: 21st Apr 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Midi:Lot (46))
Visited: Yes on 31st May 2005. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 2 Access 5

Dolmen de Pech Grillé

Dolmen de Pech Grillé submitted by theCaptain on 2nd Mar 2015. The remains of this dolmen can be found just beside the D143 road to the north of Limogne but is a bit of a wreck.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The remains of this dolmen can be found just beside the D143 road to the north of Limogne but is a bit of a wreck. The capstone has split in two along the length of the chamber with the two pieces falling one to each side of the two side slabs. As a result it now looks something like 4 parallel slabs of stone with only one half of the capstone leaning against its upright. The chamber would have been the average 3.5 metres long by 1.2 metres wide.

Dolmen de Pech Linar

Trip No.203  Entry No.204  Date Added: 20th Apr 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Midi:Lot (46))
Visited: Couldn't find on 31st May 2005

Dolmen de Pech Linar

Dolmen de Pech Linar submitted by irundarra on 11th May 2011. Site in St. Jean de Laur (LOT).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This dolmen marked on the ign 1:25000 map is a longish walk up to the top of a steep hill in a densely wooded area so on this very hot afternoon with lots of other possibilities to visit I didn’t bother to try and find it.

Driving from here down the little road to the Lot valley, a large Eagle suddenly swooped into the hedge at the side of the road in front of me, and emerged after a struggle carrying a 4 foot long snake. Still struggling with the snake, it flew off down the valley, struggling to get aloft, with the snake wrigglng about. What a tremendous sight, I felt really privileged to see this. A real David Attenborough moment.

Dolmen de Pech-Lapeyre

Trip No.203  Entry No.194  Date Added: 20th Apr 2020
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: France (Midi:Lot (46))
Visited: Yes on 30th May 2005. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 3 Access 3

Dolmen de Pech-Lapeyre

Dolmen de Pech-Lapeyre submitted by greywether on 4th Jul 2005. This is a photo of a dolmen known in the Lot Inventory as Lac d'Auris. It was signposted from the centre of Limogne-en-Quercy but, I think, simply as "Dolmen". Anyway, the notable thing about Lac d'Auris is the thickness of the capstone - almost 1m and weighing 17 tons. Apparently there is a quarry 300m away with a hole the size of the capstone.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Signposted as dolmens from the centre of the village of Limogne-en-Quercy, this dolmen is more than a kilometres walk along a trackway. The dolmen is still partly within its mound, and is notable for the thickness of its capstone, which is a rectangular 3 m by 2 m in size, but is a metre thick. The chamber is 2.5 metres by 1.5 metres in size, and opens to the southeast at 121°.

Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of rubbish here, with remains of fires, picnics and candles along with all the usual broken beer bottles.
