King's Weston Hill stockpound submitted by theCaptain on 13th Apr 2012. plan on the noticeboard showing the various items of historical interest on the King's Weston Hill ridgetop

Log Text: A few hundred metres west along the hilltop ridge from the Kings Weston Hillfort can be seen the remains of a large circular earthwork, of unsure date. People have been living and working on this hilltop ridge since neolithic times, and it is thought that this earthwork is some sort of stockpound dating from perhaps bronze or iron age times. It is a very pleasant spot up on this hilltop, surrounded by the northwestern suburbs of Bristol, but you would hardly know it, and can easily get taken back in time while up here.

King's Weston Hill barrow cemetary submitted by theCaptain on 13th Apr 2012. Walk several hundred metres west along the hilltop ridge from the Kings Weston Hillfort, past the large circular earthwork, across the roman road and its earthwork bank, and the open grassland of the hilltop now has several bushy clumps dotted around.
Some of these clumps hide the remains of several bronze age burial mounds.

Some of these clumps hide the remains of several bronze age burial mounds. The burial mounds are not in the best of condition, but are thought to date back to almost 2000BC. Log Text: At the northeastern end of the ridge that is Kings Weston Hill, now in the northwestern suburbs of Bristol, is to be found the remains of an iron age hillfort and farmstead. It is situated in parkland, just to the southwest of the more impressive Blaise Castle. The hill and immediately surrounding area is nowadays parkland, a part of the Blaise Castle estate. The steeply sloping sides of the hill are thick woodland, while the flat top of the ridge is open grassland, and makes for a nice walk. There is an informative noticeboard. The defended enclosure at the end of the ridge has been dated to 800BC and was in use until Roman times. The steep northern edge of the ridge still has some remains of earthern ramparts, while on the flat top of the hill is a rectangular banked enclosure.

Chipping Sodbury Stone Circle

Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jan 2016

Chipping Sodbury Stone Circle submitted by TheCaptain on 1st Jan 2016. New Years Day 2016 has been a foul miserable dark and wet day, so in a small effort to get myself out of the house, thought I'd go and get a couple of pictures of this fairly new stone circle. I dont know when this was constructed, I only noticed it for the first time sometime last year; it seems fairly new and I assume the stones are from the local quarry.

Oldbury Standing Stone
Date Added: 9th Sep 2020
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 3rd Jun 2020. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4

Oldbury Standing Stone submitted by TheCaptain on 8th May 2016. On a warm sunny afternoon, I went for a good look for this, but found nothing to match the description. In fact, at some time in the past (since 1953) a whole load of drainage and seawall flood protection work has been done, which now contains the Oldbury Naite Rhine within substantial banks, with any of its little tributaries in the area now in underground culverts emptying through flap doors into the Rhine. The height of the banking is now well above what it would have been.

Log Text: Went for a look for this stone on a hot sunny June afternoon as part of a walk around Oldbury. Despite being 99% sure where it was to be found, I initially didn't find it as it was totally overgrown, and not under the new footpath gate, but an old wooden bit of fence to the side. With a bit of trampling on the long grass, I got to see the whole stone. Great to see it, it would be a splendid standing stone.

Ashmead Well submitted by TheCaptain on 30th Apr 2017. Ancient spring beside the lane at the bottom of the steep bluebell and wild garlic covered hillside to the north of the River Frome and the disused Thames and Severn Canal, below the village of Oakridge.
The well is just set back from the roadside, with a little plaque, and a notice board just over the road, stating that it has been used for human and animal consumption for all history, and has stories of its healing properties.

Wick Burial Chamber (Gloucestershire) submitted by TheCaptain on 15th Jul 2017. It is still there, but getting well overgrown and hidden by the tree growing within it. The hedges around the field are now so big that the only place to see it from is the well locked gate.

Hoar Stone at Duntisbourne submitted by TheCaptain on 23rd Aug 2017. "Seven years ago photographer David Quentin began capturing surreal, alien-like scenes of rocks falling from the sky at locations across the UK. It all started when the London-based photographer threw a stone into the air and took a picture of it to see how it looked..."

Horton Camp submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Mar 2004. Horton Camp Hillfort, South Gloucestershire, ST765845, March 2004.
View looking northwest along the remaining bank across the top of the hill. There is no sign of a ditch. The "inside" of the camp is to the left.
I may well be wrong, but I think that this bank may be a former internal division of what was once a much bigger camp taking in the entire promontary, not just the southern end.

Log Text: Walk round the Korea Friendship Trail from Dursley on a bright and breezy Sunday afternoon with a pint in the Old Spot afterwards. The views up here are tremendous, and with various other nearby viewpoints you get a full 360 degrees. Even on this not very clear day, as well as almost the entire length of the Cotswold Edge, I could make out the Mendip Hills, Bristol Channel, Black Mountains, Malvern Hills.
