Log Text: About 100 metres to the east of the chambered tomb, following a footpath up between the houses, the remains of a bronze age round barrow can be found in another green grassy area left between the houses. Its about 10 metres in diameter, and in a few places an occasional stone can be seen to be sticking through the grass.

Mynydd Bach Cairn 2 submitted by TheCaptain on 25th Mar 2020. Found the remains of this cairn fairly easily, making a circular patch of green grass amongst the gorse and other growth. It is not a great monument being very flattened and destroyed, and also the whole area is absolutely covered with rubbish of all sorts.

Log Text: First cairn of four marked on the OS Map during a walk from the Sirhowy Country Park around the Cwmfelinfach valley, up the Sirhowy River and back along the Rhymney Ridgeway path. Found the remains of this cairn fairly easily, making a circular patch of green grass amongst the gorse and other growth. It is not a great monument being very flattened and destroyed, and also the whole area is absolutely covered with rubbish of all sorts. The whole area is used by people for offroading and all sorts of other activities, some not so wholesome.

This was an easily seen tumulus of fairly large size just to the east of the trackway and walled off from it, which has helped with its survival. We stopped here for lunch sheltered from the wind and in the sun.

Twyn-Yr-Oerfel A submitted by TheCaptain on 25th Mar 2020. The easterly of the two barrows, this one is the more ruined, but easily found and identified. It has a large pit dug into the top and a bench positioned on the top.
The views from up here would be terriffic, but the whole area is not a great place to be with so many off road tracks all around making the whole area a mess of mud.

Log Text: The fourth and last cairn marked on the OS Map during a walk from the Sirhowy Country Park around the Cwmfelinfach valley, up the Sirhowy River and back along the Rhymney Ridgeway path.
A few hundred yards to the east of the previous barrow, this one is more ruined than that, but easily found and identified. It has a large pit dug into the top and a bench positioned on the top. The views from up here would be terriffic, but the whole area is not a great place to be with so many off road tracks all around making the whole area a mess of mud. The old mining tips don't help, so perhaps it is an improvement on a century ago.

Twyn-Yr-Oerfel B submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Mar 2020. Following the ridgeway track to the south the barrow is right in front of you as you descend into the open land. It was surrounded by many large blocks of stone to prevent the off road drivers driving over it.

Log Text: The third cairn of four marked on the OS Map during a walk from the Sirhowy Country Park around the Cwmfelinfach valley, up the Sirhowy River and back along the Rhymney Ridgeway path.
Following the ridgeway track to the south and then east passing beween the large minimg tip and the forest along the stony track used by off road bikers, and the barrow is right in front of you as you descend into the open land. It was surrounded by many large blocks of stone to prevent the off road drivers driving over it, but this does not prevent the bikers.
While here there was the remains of a burnt out motorbike laying just beside it. The barrow is nicely formed apart from the tracks over it, and looked initially to have a large stone structure within, but I later read that it is built onto a natural rock outcrop, so this is probably part of it.

Log Text: Breezy but sunny afternoon walk up Gray Hill to check out the old stones, then a walk around Wentwood Forest. Much of the top of the hill has become very overgrown, and it was initially difficult to find the stone row leading down to the circle. I disturbed at least three fallow deer on my way through. However, the bracken and gorse on the slopes around the stones is mostly cleared, so it was easy to find the big stones of the row, and the circle beside the lower of the big stones, although most of the circle is well overgrown with brambles bracken and gorse, and my legs got ripped to shreds.

Gray Hill stone row submitted by TheCaptain on 2nd Apr 2004. Grey Hill or Gray Hill Stone Row, Monmouthshire, ST437936 - ST438935
Looking to the south down the hill, is a fairly reasonable alignment of 5 stones in a row, which sort of joins between the jumbled stone remains on the top of the hill and the stone circle.

Right on the top of the hill, with spectacular views all around is the remains of an ancient, but well worn cairn. I could have been imagining it, but did this cairn once have a kerbed ring around it, and some internal structures ?

Thornwell Farm submitted by thecaptain on 15th Nov 2006. On a housing estate to the south of Chepstow, are to be found the sad remains of a once major neolithic chambered tomb.
It is on a green space between the houses of Fountains Way, and has a very large old oak tree growing on top of it.
Under the tree can be seen remains of a large mound with various rocks sticking out, particularly on the northern side.

Remains of iron age fortifications on the banks of the Severn estuary at Sudbrook, beside the railway tunnel pumping station and the landfall of the M4 Severn Crossing on the Welsh side. Lovely looking out to sea when the tide is in, not so lovely looking inland with the houses built so near.

Log Text: From the hilltop southern cairn, the northern cairn can be seen about 100m away down the slight slope with Blorenge and Ysgyryd in the distance. But the ground underfoot up here is so bad for walking across, no path, knee deep heather, broken stone, muddy holes and adders, that I didn't risk my ankles in going over to it.

Log Text: Day trip to do the strenuous walk around and over Blorenge; having all the up at the end of the day cannot be recommended! Once up to the summit, there is a large circular cairn structure right on top, with the trig point just to the south. I didn't climb onto the cairn, and missed seeing any internal structure, although I now read that a cist can be seen. A bit further to the south, I saw a couple of stones sticking up, and closer inspection suggested another round cairn and these stones gave me the impression that they were three upright slabs in a line, possibly once the sides to an internal chamber.

Log Text: A visit Raglan Castle, and as it's such a lovely day and seeing the hills on the horizon, I just had to go up top of Blorenge and walk along to the highly visible Carn y Defaid. It's a terrible path underfoot from the Foxhunter car park, all a jumble of rocks, bog and heather. The hilltop southern cairn can be seen from miles around, and equally, on a day like today, can see for miles from it. To the north is the great whaleback moutain Blorenge, while to the northeast, over Abergavenny, can be seen the broken hill of Ysgyryd. Superb, but I do remember being here in the past, all cold and wet with about 10 yards visibility!

If it were not for the wall these barrows would merge into the background. Even with it there, they only appear as green lumps against it's grey stones.
