Carneglos row

Carneglos row submitted by SandyG on 17th Jan 2018. Stone row in the foreground and the distinctive Brown Willy beyond. View from south east (Scale 1m).

Log Text: On the way back from another failed attempt to get to Goodaver circle, I decided not to completely give up, and went for a look for the stone row, in an open field to the west of the northern corner of the forest. It's open access land, and easy to enter the field after taking the track westwards from the radio mast. I first found what looked to be the remains of a hut circle, and then found the stone row. Its clearly an ancient stone row, with a few fairly big stones, but most of them are fairly small. The ground here was very rough and dry after such a prolonged period with no rain, but looks like it gets boggy and well trodden and churned up by the cattle in the fields.

Carneglos Barrow

Carneglos Barrow submitted by TheCaptain on 27th Jun 2023. Somewhere in the dense forest is this barrow. The forest track passes close by, but there is no easy way in, but I am sure I could glimpse some raised earthworks in places.

Log Text: Stop at Webbs Down near Bolventor to try to walk to the Goodaver stone circle through the forests from the north. Its very hot, and about halfway there the forest tracks are all shut off, with barbed wire and CCTV. I look at going over the rough ground to the west of the forest, but it wont be easy. I then check my route map, and realise that the 5 km walk is each way, not a full round trip. Decide this is no good, and head back to the car, but I do get to visit the stone row. Time to go to Blisland for an afternoon pint.

Log Text: Seen from the carriage of the East Somerset steam railway near Merryfield Lane halt. Two large round barrows in a field, with fairly distinct ditches around them. There is remains of a third much ploughed out barrow. Looks like badgers are starting to dig away at one of the two large barrows.

Doulting Quarries barrow

Doulting Quarries barrow submitted by TheCaptain on 20th Mar 2023. In some open land behind the bus stop at Doulting, opposite to the stone quarries entrance, I saw what looked like a longbarrow with stone entrance. Closer inspection showed this to be a modern interpretation, with a large stone standing on the top.

Hembury Castle

Hembury Castle submitted by caradoc68 on 15th May 2008. Site in Devon: Hembury castle (the danish camp), just north of Buckfast "devon" SX 725 684. Good little hillfort hiddern away way in Hembury wood, a site worth visiting>. Has very steep rampart bank, 20 feet in some places, a scrape the other side of the ditch. Inside the fort there is a small motte & bailey in the south west corner.

Log Text: A nice sunny afternoon, after Sunday lunch at Scorriton and a walk out to Bench Tor, I decide to go and have a look at Hembury Castle before heading home. What a lovely place, old woodland with a hilltop iron age fort, modified and updated with a Norman Motte. In places the ramparts are huge, presumably increased for the Motte & Bailey castle. Lovely.

Log Text: Walk from South Brent up onto the moor around Corringdon Ball. Just as we get to the longbarrow and other megalithic sites my phone malfunctions and packs up. Getting very fed up with this decide to give up looking for any more old stones and just continue on with the walk up to Shipley Bridge.

Log Text: From the menhir I walk up to the top of the hill to look at the two ring cairns. Both quite large diameter, seemingly a ring of stone around a flat inside with a pile in the middle. The southern of the two is more distinct, and the central mound and ring are more obviously comprised of stones. I didn't see anything resembling a circle of upright stones!

Log Text: A cold grey February afternoon walk out onto the moor to visit the Harbourne Head menhir. It’s a nice pointy topped stone, slightly taller than me and leaning to one side. Some swaling going on nearby, but not close to the stone and doesn't prevent me getting a visit.

Rippon Tor

Rippon Tor

Rippon Tor submitted by AngieLake on 19th Oct 2007. Having just puffed my way up the side of the tor (!), this is the first view of the Cairn that Butler calls 'C1' from the west side. In the centre of the pile of stones is a modern Trig. station. (The height of Rippon Tor is 473m.) [see site page for further info]
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The forecast is for a cold icy but bright sunny day as we pack up and leave Splash Cottage, so I decide for a walk up to Rippon Tor and around before the journey home. Unfortunately the real weather up there means I am in the clouds and fog. I make the effort to climb the tor, but its freezing fog up there, and can't see more than about 25 metres, so have a quick wander to the hilltop cairns, cross and millstone, then back down to the car via an old boundary cross at the edge of the frozen Blackslade Mire.

Log Text: A day to myself, and decide to go to Totnes, but first go the scenic way through Buckland, then decide to walk out to Buckland Beacon for a look at the Ten Commandments stones. The views from here are fantastic, right down to the sea all around the south, including right along the Teign estuary. Great to spend time looking all around the north and west trying to figure out all the various tors and bits of Dartmoor previously visited. Magnificent. There is a very interesting series of Boundary stones to the north, one of which looked to me like an old cross originally.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Walking back northwards along the ridge and from the top of Broad Barrow, Hamel Down Cross can be seen shining in the sun away from the modern track to the west, so I go for a look. It’s a lovely weathered old stone cross which has lost its head and one of its arms. It has some sort of carving on it's east face, probably a Duke of Somerset boundary marking, but the cross clearly predates that.

Hamel Down Beacon cairn

Hamel Down Beacon cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 14th Jan 2023. On the southern top of Hameldown at 517m, at a corner of the field wall, is a prominent large cairn. The field wall makes no attempt to avoid the cairn, running right over it, but not across the centre. The cairn has been cut away from the western side within the walled field. Here seen from the south.

Log Text: On to the southern top of Hameldown at 517m, at a corner of the field wall, is another prominent large cairn, again with a Duke Stone on its top. The field wall makes no attempt to avoid the cairn, running right over it, but not across the centre. From here the views to the south open up with almost the whole of the southern moor and southeast Devon to be seen.

Log Text: Onwards southward slightly downhill to a field wall where there is another barrow with a Duke Stone on top, named as Two Barrows. Looking for the second, and it can be seen right under the corner of the walls, no doubt it has been used as a boundary corner for a long time.
