Ashley Walk mound

Ashley Walk mound submitted by TheCaptain on 8th Feb 2022. A large mound marked as tumulus on my OS map, possibly the earthcovered remains of the "Submarine Pens" wartime bombing range targets.

Log Text: Walk with friends in the New Forest over heathland through an old bombing range, hunting down a few tumuli. This large mound was marked as tumulus on the OS map, where we stopped to have lunch. This area used to be Ashley Walk bombing range during WW2 and is pockmarked with craters. I find out later that it is possible that this large mound is the earthcovered remains of the "Submarine Pens" targets.

Ashmead Well

Ashmead Well submitted by TheCaptain on 30th Apr 2017. Ancient spring beside the lane at the bottom of the steep bluebell and wild garlic covered hillside to the north of the River Frome and the disused Thames and Severn Canal, below the village of Oakridge. The well is just set back from the roadside, with a little plaque, and a notice board just over the road, stating that it has been used for human and animal consumption for all history, and has stories of its healing properties.

Log Text: I notice online that a little avenue is declared to the south of MD4, so I have a good look around. I see perhaps a couple of stones, and maybe a set of 4 in a square arrangement, but nothing which shouts out to me that here is a stone row.

Log Text: From Moor Divock 5, I walk off to the northwest towards White Raise cairn, which can clearly be seen. Much of the bracken has been cut back, and it seems a reasonable way to go. I start to see lots of stones poking their pale tops clear of the grass. Am I imagining it, or is this some sort of stone row. It certainly looks possible. Further on, and there are more stones, some of them quite large and certainly not in natural positions. Intriguing. I now start to think I am seeing two rows of stones, fairly unevenly spaced, and not particularly parallel, but definitely there. At this point, everything is disturbed by a large shakehole and gulley, so I cannot directly follow what would have been the line of the stones. Once past this, and there are more stones standing in amongst the ferns, and it is now noticeable that the bracken has been cut back along the line of this avenue. Its a pity I hadn't spotted this before, and just headed off directly from the northern hillock at MD5 towards White Raise. This just has to be an avenue of stones running between MD5 and White Raise. It is only much later when I start to log my findings that I see there is an avenue included on the portal, under the name Askham Fell, not Moor Divock. It is really pleasing to have sort of found this all by myself without any prior knowledge. Several weeks later I still feel chuffed!

Aspers Field submitted by baz on 26th Apr 2003. This stone (at NY558152) lies in the next field to the more well known Goggleby Stone (NY559151), from which I took this picture (with zoom). Both of these stones form a part of the Shap Stone Avenue.

Log Text: Just beside the little road which runs off the D.19 to the north of St-Jean-de-Laur towards Les Cabranes, can be seen the remains of this dolmen. Three metres long, by 1.8 metres wide and 2 metres tall, the chamber has only one side slab, but is kept together with a drystone wall on the northern side. It has in the past been used as an animal shelter, and there are masses of ants everywhere.

Aubiac Dolmen 2

Aubiac Dolmen 2 submitted by johnstone on 5th Jan 2018. Still half in it's tumulus and half of the capstone is gone, June 24, 2017
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Unmarked on any of my maps, but just at the junction of the D.19 and the little road which runs north towards Les Cabranes, can be seen a mound. Closer inspection shows it to have the remains of a reasonable dolmen chamber within it, 3.5 metres long, 1.2 metres wide and with a capstone covering only its eastern half. It makes me wonder just how many more dolmens and burial mounds like this there are around here.

Autel des Druides des Moitiers d'Allonne submitted by thecaptain on 20th Dec 2004. Autel des Druides des Moitiers d'Allonne Allée Couverte in Manche, Normandy, as seen from the west at the entrance to its field.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: To the east of Moitiers d'Allonne, just a few miles northeast of Barneville-Carteret, can be found “Autel des Druides des Moitiers d'Allonne”, also known as the Allée Couverte de Grand Breuil. Situated near the top of a hill along a small road north of the D.902, this monument can be found signposted down a farm trackway, but finding anywhere to park in the vicinity was not easy. It is also signposted from the village of Les Moitiers d'Allonne.

Approximately 20 metres in length, and on a north – south axis, this Allée Couverte was rebuilt in the 1960’s after having been partially buried and used as a cattle shelter. The width between the two rows of stones is about 1.5 to 2 metres, and there are at least 6 capstones in place with a height of about 1.5 metres underneath. When I was there, the Northern half of the Allée was clear of vegetation and open to get inside, while the southern half was in a very overgrown state. The surrounding field had been ploughed right up to the edges of the monument, and in some places at the south end damage had occurred.

Log Text: Did pretty much the whole Avebury tour with Dad and Rachael. Drove up the avenue from the Sanctury, and parked in the NH car park. Walked around the whole henge, and visited the internal circles. I'd forgotten quite how massive and wonderful Avebury is, even with a lot of people here

Log Text: Decided to go find The Polisher on a wonderful sunny day to see if my legs were working again. Parked at Avebury, then walked up the Herepath to The Ridgeway, and turned north. Found the polisher too easily, and had lunch sat on it. Legs working well after the first chiro session, so continued north up the Ridgeway before turning to drop down off the hills and back to Avebury via some tumuli, but had to go a longer way due to a field of inquisitive bullocks. Back to Avebury and walked around the henge and stones before a pint in the Red Lion. Still fairly early and legs feeling good, so walked down the route of the Beckhampton Avenue to Adam and Eve and a huge longbarrow before going back To Avebury and the car. Drove via Silbury to the Kennet Avenue, and walked up and down that, finding the second polisher stone. Beautiful day ouy.

Log Text: The electric at home is off for the day so they can cut some trees, so I have a trip to Avebury for a long walk up to the polisher, down the Ridgeway and back to Avebury via Overton Down, East Kennet, West Kennet longbarrow, Silbury Hill, Waden Hill and the Avenue. Well deserved pint at the Red Lion. Beautiful day out.

Avebury Aerial 0507

Avebury Aerial 0507 submitted by JJ on 4th Nov 2003. Here's my theory: As you can see, the shadows cast on the western side of the circle point to the exact spot for the next stone in line. Perhaps this is why Avebury is more hexagonal in shape than round. Based on this assumption, then it would be easy to work out the heights of the missing stones without too much difficulty. Maybe the distance between each stone along this side was calculated not by 'linear measurement' but rather set by the preceding stone and shadow cast. Obviousl...
