East Moor cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 5th Dec 2010. This is a nice large cairn about 14 or 15 metres in diameter, which has several large slab stones surrounding it, and what seems to be the robbed out remains of a chamber in the centre.

East Moor ring cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 5th Dec 2010. The ring cairn centrally on the top of the hill in the middle of East Moor is a splendid example, about 15 metres in diameter. It has a rubble bank about 1 metre wide surrounding a nicely flattened centre.
Pictures cannot do this ring cairn any justice.

East Moor stone B submitted by TheCaptain on 6th Dec 2010. Less than 50 metres to the west of the round cairn can be seen a stone standing proud of the moor, so I went for a look.
It is clearly an edge set stone positioned here, 2 feet tall, 3 feet wide and having lost its top.

East Moor stone C submitted by TheCaptain on 6th Dec 2010. About 50 metres to the southeast of the round cairn can be seen a stone standing proud of the moor, so I went for a look. It is clearly an edge set stone positioned here, about 2.5 feet tall and wide, a definite stander similar to the one to the west of the cairn.

East Moor stone row submitted by TheCaptain on 25th May 2010. I went for a long walk on East Moor (Bodmin Moor) on Sunday 23 May, with the intention of visiting and photographing several of the ancient sites on the moor, with the East Moor stone row perhaps the No 1 target.
I also took my new GPS with me - more accurate and user friendly than my old one, so I took this chance to test it out. Here is a plot of my meanderings, many of the sites showing well as I wander about them taking pictures.

I certainly found a stone standing at the grid ref noted here, about 0.3 metres high.

Easter Aquhorthies submitted by TheCaptain on 31st Jul 2017. The beautiful stone circle, almost complete, is contained within a little circular walled enclosure, a bit like Boscawen-un, which has probably helped the survival of this sublime place.

Log Text: A couple of miles to the west of Inverurie, in some very rural farmland, is the Easter Aquhorthies stone circle. There is a little parking area from which it is a few hundred metres walk aup the lane to the circle. While I was visiting, the local farmer was out with the BT men having his line fixed or adjusted so that he can get a proper broadband connection, if only I could get such a service. The beautiful stone circle, almost complete, is contained within a little circular walled enclosure, a bit like Boscawen-un, which although it has probably helped the survival of this sublime place, makes photography difficult. Unlike many of the others I have seen today, this one is well cared for by the Scottish authorities, and all looking very tidy. Beautiful.

Log Text: Ancient woodland covered limestone hill, now a nature reserve, to the north of Portishead, beside the shipping channel into Portbury and Avonmouth docks, and the river Avon up to Bristol. As such has been an important strategic place since history began. There's a lot of history to the area - the remains of an Iron Age fort can be seen above the path on the north side of the Wood. The Romans also arrived at some point. World War 2 gun emplacements were sited at Battery Point and a military presence has been here as far back as the Civil War when a fort on the site was stormed by parlimentarians.

While on King Arthur’s Downs, I wondered whether I had found a possible stone row, at SX137775. Unusual for round here I agree, but it wouldnt be too dissimilar to the Nine Maidens row at St Breock.
Walk eastwards from the two circles along the edge of the southern wall, and after a couple of hundred yards can be seen a large pointed stone flat to the ground. This stone is about three and a ...

Log Text: I took a walk out to the Pointe de Penbert, from where the entrance to the Golfe de Morbihan can clearly be seen, and all the many islands within the gulf. It is a smashing day with a good breeze, and lots and lots of sailing boats are out having fun. There's a cracking tacking duel going on between two large single handed craft as I was writing. It all looks lots and lots of fun. Just offshore can be seen the islet of Er Lannic, with its double cromlech. Many of the stones stand proud of the island, and indeed the sea, where these half submerged circles are situated, and can clearly be seen from here.

Log Text: This is a sad looking little dolmen in a field of sweetcorn, looking fallen and getting overgrown and unloved. It is in a hamlet plagued by mad dogs chasing after me, barking and growling continuously. There is a second dolmen here, even more hidden in the undergrowth.

Log Text: Much has been written about this place by others already, and I wont spend valuable daylight by sitting and writing anymore for myself, except to say that it is all very different to what it was in 1987, and that the current thinking is that the Grand Menhir was once just one of 19 stood up in a row, and was toppled deliberately after only a couple of hundred years. The other menhirs were broken and used for other purposes.
