Nine Stones (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. Boxing Day 2004. Composite image. A bright sunny morning, but the trees keep this little circle in the shade. Only eight stones are visible: the ninth is being engulfed by the roots of the large beech tree on the left of the picture.

I rediscovered this photo and selectively manipulated the contrast so that you can now see the stones (previously they were too dark). I've uploaded a similar photo to Wikimedia Commons - they need pictures of ancient sites for use on free sites like Wikipedia.

There is a theory that dolmens (or quoits as they are known in Cornwall) were not totally covered in earth but the capstones were left uncovered and were a copy of the horizon. I have manipulated the tones in this shot to show this, but no shapes have been altered.

In the distance, in the glare of the setting sun, can be seen the two west end stones of the southern row. Two other taller stones on the south side of that southern row are also visible above centre, and to right of pic. Merrivale NW submitted by thecaptain on 6th Nov 2004. Just to the south of the western end of the Merrivale southern avenue are the remains of a once large cairn with retaining circle.
The stones from this cairn were removed in 1851 to mend the road, leaving just a circle of uneven ground, with a few slabs remaining in an outer bank.

There are two, main, rows at Merrivale - North and South.
The north row consists of two lines of stones, aligned east -west and nearly 200m long.
However, the two lines of stones are only about 1m apart so you can only just walk between them. It has larger stones at the west end and a blocking stone at the east.
The southern row doesn't start or finish on the same alignment, is not parallel to the northern one and was, probably, not built at the same time.
