Chun Quoit submitted by sem on 16th Jun 2005. The capstone and the horizon.
There is a theory that dolmens (or quoits as they are known in Cornwall) were not totally covered in earth but the capstones were left uncovered and were a copy of the horizon. I have manipulated the tones in this shot to show this, but no shapes have been altered.

Boscawen Un submitted by AngieLake on 6th Nov 2005. I should really keep this a secret! - the best time to visit Boscawen Un, on a quiet evening in May when bluebells are still carpeting the circle. Something to hang on to while we endure the bleak days of winter. (Don't tell anyone.......!)

Merry Maidens (Circle) submitted by JimChampion on 27th Oct 2006. August 2005. The Merry Maidens under fluffy white clouds. I rediscovered this photo and selectively manipulated the contrast so that you can now see the stones (previously they were too dark). I've uploaded a similar photo to Wikimedia Commons - they need pictures of ancient sites for use on free sites like Wikipedia.

Merrivale North Row submitted by stewart on 12th Oct 2003. Grid Ref SX 555 747
There are two, main, rows at Merrivale - North and South.
The north row consists of two lines of stones, aligned east -west and nearly 200m long.
However, the two lines of stones are only about 1m apart so you can only just walk between them. It has larger stones at the west end and a blocking stone at the east.
The southern row doesn't start or finish on the same alignment, is not parallel to the northern one and was, probably, not built at the same time.

Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 15th Mar 1994. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 4

Merrivale NW submitted by thecaptain on 6th Nov 2004. Just to the south of the western end of the Merrivale southern avenue are the remains of a once large cairn with retaining circle.
The stones from this cairn were removed in 1851 to mend the road, leaving just a circle of uneven ground, with a few slabs remaining in an outer bank.

In the foreground, Merrivale Single Row 3 (see thecaptain's overview plan) at sunset on 21st September, the day before the Autumn Equinox, 2004. In the distance, in the glare of the setting sun, can be seen the two west end stones of the southern row. Two other taller stones on the south side of that southern row are also visible above centre, and to right of pic. ('Thecaptain' has a theory that these, and other taller stones in the rows, align with the menhir at certain times of the year.) T...
