Westbury White Horse | Hill Figure or Geoglyph | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 1st Nov 1986 | 5 | 4 | 3 | I grew up in Warminster so the horse was a fairly easy walk away, but rather a more challenging one if you wanted to take a closer look. I remember sitting in the turf eyeball one time. Sitting at the summit of the hill and looking down gives you a real sense of what an immense hill figure this is.
Stonehenge. | Stone Circle | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 1st Feb 1987 | 4 | 2 | 3 | I haven't been to Stonehenge for a very long time now, the last visit I recall at all clearly was in the company of a newish girlfriend on an absolutely freezing day. But I visited often as a child, in the days when you could wander around anywhere and even - gasp - touch the stones. I believe my ex... Read More |

Stanton Drew - The Cove | Standing Stones | England | Somerset | Visited | 1st May 1993 | 3 | 3 | 4 | I guess there aren't that many megalithic monuments in pub gardens. Nice to sit in the sun in the shade of the two upright cove stones, especially given that (at the time) the Druids Arms was a right manky dump (smelly).
Addington Long Barrow | Long Barrow | England | Kent | Visited | 1st Sep 1995 | 2 | 3 | 4 | I visited the barrow on the same afternoon as visiting the Chestnuts nearby. Could only view from the roadside and to be honest mot much was visible in the long grass but a couple of stones which were on the tomb's kerb. Disappointing.
Chestnuts | Long Barrow | England | Kent | Visited | 1st Sep 1995 | 2 | 4 | 5 | Having telephone Rose Alba to make an appointment I turned up the appointed hour and what a treat.Imagine having this in your back garden!
The owner of the property was very generous with her time, and had a clearly well rehearsed spiel all typed up on laminated sheets. This was very helpful inde... Read More |

Oldbury Castle | Hillfort | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 1st Jun 1997 | 4 | 4 | 2 | Stumbled across the ramparts while making the trudge up to the Cherhill white horse. You feel a real sense of achievement when you make it to the top and look back over the route you came. One thing is for sure: you would not have much energy left for acts of aggression against the occupiers.
Cherhill White Horse | Hill Figure or Geoglyph | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 1st Jun 1997 | 4 | 4 | 2 | Mainly glimpsed as driving by towards Avebury but I did make the climb up the hill for a closer look the one time. It's a bit smaller than Westbury WH and doesn't seem quite so well rendered but an impressive gee gee nonetheless.
West Kennett Long Barrow | Long Barrow | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 1st Jul 1997 | 5 | 5 | 2 | The only time we visited the West Kennet Long Barrow we were just about to leave when a bunch of folks turned up and held some kind of a sing-song inside. We hung about a while marvelling at the booming then made our way down the hill just in case some sacrificial rite might be about to unfold.

Figsbury Rings | Hillfort | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 1st Jul 1999 | 3 | 4 | 5 | You can drive, slowly, up to a car park very near the rings. It's a popular dog-walker site so if you meet someone on the way to or from the site it can get a bit fraught. The outer ring has henge-like banks though quite some distance from the ditches if I recall correctly. There's a wide flat cause... Read More |

Four Stones (Powys) | Stone Circle | Wales | Powys | Visited | 1st Jun 2000 | 5 | 4 | 5 | Compact and intense, the four stones stand at the edge of a field, the tallest is just high enough to peep over the wall at the edge of the lane. Judging by photos of my then wife next to the stones three of the four are above five feet, the tallest nearer six. The fourth stone is somewhat stumpier ... Read More |

Stoney Littleton | Chambered Cairn | England | Somerset | Visited | 1st Jun 2001 | 4 | 5 | 3 | Bit of a trek up, along, then up some more, while dodging the cows etc. But worth it, even if those corbelled kerb stones look a bit sus. The ammonite fossil on the left-hand side portal stone is pretty special.
Arthur's Stone | Chambered Tomb | England | Herefordshire | Visited | 1st Jul 2001 | 4 | 5 | 5 | After a bit of a struggle with map reading, we fluked finding the site, and could park just yards away on the layby. It's a marvellous place and the cracked capstone adds to the marvellousness, in an odd way. Fantastic views across the Golden Valley and definitely a site I'd like to return to.

Old Sarum | Hillfort | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 1st Aug 2001 | 4 | 4 | 4 | Lots to see on the outer edges of the site where there are well-preserved (or restored) foundations of structures that surrounded the original cathedral. Cross the footbridge and climb the bank (an impressive gradient) for more ruins and spectacular views. Unless my memory is playing tricks on me th... Read More |

Avebury - The Cove | Standing Stones | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 1st Aug 2001 | 5 | 5 | 4 | On one of our visits to the village, in August 2001, the Cove was caged within some Heras fence or something of the type as works to stabilise the stones was being carried out. Or had been carried out. I think on at least one other visit a similar structure was in place too. So I chose a photograph ... Read More |

The Sanctuary. | Stone Circle | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 5th Aug 2001 | 2 | 4 | 5 | I feel a little fraudulent rating The Sanctuary 4 for Ambience: it's essentially a complex of stone markers with no real vestige of what may have stood at this site. (Excarnation complex, for example?) But for all it's forlorn air, and the constant roar-hiss of the cars speeding close by, when seen ... Read More |

Uffington White Horse | Hill Figure or Geoglyph | England | Oxfordshire | Visited | 1st Jul 2002 | 4 | 2 | 4 | You don't get much of an impression of the horse, if it is a horse, when you're up close, especially on a mid-summer day when the site is absolutely crawling with visitors, ice-cream vans etc. As you approach the site the figure is much more distinct though and it's very worth the trip, especially i... Wayland's Smithy | Long Barrow | England | Oxfordshire | Visited | 1st Jul 2002 | 4 | 3 | 2 | Absolutely crawling with visitors on the day we walked along the Ridgway to see this marvellous tomb. If there had been maybe one-third as many kids hooting and yelling as they clambered all over the monument it might have been bearable, but their simian behaviour seemed calculated to annoy. Despite... Read More |

Coldrum | Chambered Tomb | England | Kent | Visited | 1st Jun 2003 | 3 | 4 | 3 | An amazing site: a really steeply banked mound with the chambered tomb about two-thirds the way up - I've never seen anything quite like it. There are a number of decent sized kerb stones around the front part of the mound which a nearby sign describes as a stone circle. The mound kind of merges wit... Read More |

Longstone Cove | Standing Stones | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 6th Jun 2004 | 3 | 4 | 3 | In 2004 we rented a cottage in Avebury village for a week and one evening when the boys weren't complaining too much about tired legs we walked the putative route of the Beckhampton Avenue. There really are a lot of sarsens at the sides of the road, incorporated into walls, half-buried at the side o... Read More |

Arbor Low 1 | Stone Circle | England | Derbyshire | Visited | 18th Oct 2011 | 4 | 5 | 3 | Oh this is a magnificent place, for scenery it is second only to Castlerigg I would say. The day I visited was blowing an absolute gale but just as I was deciding to abandon ship, completely chilled to the bone, a gap appeared in the clouds and a rainbow on the horizon. I absolutely have to go back,... Read More |

Bryn Celli Ddu | Passage Grave | Wales | Anglesey | Visited | 3rd Apr 2013 | 5 | 5 | 4 | A few miles away the Snowdonia peaks were still covered in snow and the lake at the foot of Snowdon was still frozen... but the first signs of a belated spring were all over Anglesey. Which made it a perfect day to visit and appreciate Bryn Celli Ddu, an absolutely perfect chambered tomb that you ha... Read More |

Rollright Stones | Stone Circle | England | Oxfordshire | Visited | 6th Apr 2013 | 5 | 5 | 5 | Although it can get quite busy (but deservedly so: this is a place of great magic) the Rollrights have to be seen if you're in any way serious as a megalithomane.
It's quite easy to park alongside and then it's a very easy walk to the stone circle. The boulders have a unique gnarly quality and a... Read More |

Whispering Knights | Portal Tomb | England | Oxfordshire | Visited | 6th Apr 2013 | 4 | 4 | 4 | Hemmed in by the iron railings, the Whispering Knights are composed of the same gnarly rock as the Rollrights across the way.
King Stone at the Rollrights | Standing Stone (Menhir) | England | Oxfordshire | Visited | 6th Apr 2013 | 5 | 4 | 3 | Although caged with the same iron railings as the Whispering Knights, the King Stone has a bit more room for a crafty stretch of a lonely midnight when no one is watching. He's a hefty old chunk and has seen many tos and fros over the long centuries but still holds his head up high. A characterful o... Read More |

West Kennet Avenue | Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 3rd Jun 2014 | 4 | 5 | 3 | I don't remember when I first visited the Avenue but it wasn't on the first time I went to Avebury, which was pretty stupid. I think we were in a hurry to quaff a beer at the Red Lion and to be swarmed by the local wasps. And then to get the buses home, which was a way convoluted trip from Warminste... Read More |

Silbury Hill | Artificial Mound | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 4th Jun 2014 | 4 | 4 | 5 | Passed by many times, stopped for a while quite a few, dating back to the 1960s. Silbury is timeless, commanding the landscape. I like that it is so enigmatic, I love how at certain points within the southern circle at Avebury the very top of Silbury is just visible above the henge bank. At moments ... Read More |

Stanton Drew | Stone Circle | England | Somerset | Visited | 10th Jul 2015 | 3 | 4 | 3 | I really hadn't appreciated how vast the main circle is and this can be a tricky site to make sense of. A few stones here and there suggestive of an avenue, smaller circles off over yonder, lots of prone or semi-prone boulders, weird clusters of stones that might have been a dolmen, or even a delibe... Housesteads Roman Fort | Stone Fort or Dun | England | Northumberland | Visited | 12th Jul 2015 | 4 | 4 | 2 | Last stop in England on my way up to Orkney, and well worth it. It's not a long walk from the car park but it's pretty steep. Terribly scenic, and quite well preserved, and I enjoyed the "beware of the ferrets" sign. Apparently they are quite rife and apt to bite. Didn't see any though.

Stenness | Stone Circle | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 13th Jul 2015 | 4 | 5 | 4 | In the summer of 2015 I drove from Kent to Orkney in two or three long hops, staying several nights at the Standing Stone Hotel which is (was?) about a mile from the Stones of Stenness. I'd wanted to visit here for soooo long, in particular these stones, ever since seeing them on that Julian Cope al... Read More |

Ring of Brodgar | Stone Circle | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 13th Jul 2015 | 4 | 5 | 4 | As I was staying nearby I took the opportunity to visit this magnificent monument several times, at different times of day. The first visit was the best: the sun was beginning to set (but it stays low on the horizon a long time at this time of year on Orkney) and the stones cast the most almighty sh... Read More |

Barnhouse Settlement | Ancient Village or Settlement | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 14th Jul 2015 | 3 | 4 | 4 | A short ramble from the Stones of Stenness, there are several recognisable structures at ground level, with hearths and other characteristic features. Can't hold a candle to Skara Brae, but then what sites can?
Isbister: Tomb Of The Eagles | Chambered Cairn | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 14th Jul 2015 | 5 | 5 | 2 | A bit of a trek from the visitor centre/museum... but a spectacular one, looking out over impressive cliffs with open sea as far as the eye can see. Guillemots and every other bird with a squawk to offer contribute to the soundtrack. There's a monument to the archaeologist who curated this site a fe... Read More |

Isbister: Bronze Age House | Ancient Village or Settlement | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 14th Jul 2015 | 2 | 4 | 2 | Not far from the Tomb Of The Eagles, this was probably an industrial building of a sort, maybe a tannery? Whatever it was, there was much use made of a pool for heating water using red-hot stones. Some of the discarded stones are strewn nearby but most form a midden to one side, now mostly overgrown... Tomb of the Eagles Museum | Museum | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 14th Jul 2015 | 4 | 4 | 5 | Marvellous museum displaying relics from the Tomb Of the Eagles and one of those rare places that encourages you to handle some of the exhibits. Various stone implements, an eagle's talon, and so on. The inevitable gift shop is not half bad.
Ness of Brodgar | Ancient Village or Settlement | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 15th Jul 2015 | 3 | 4 | 5 | I visited while the annual dig season was in full swing. Difficult to interpret what you're seeing (and much more excavation has been made in the years since, 2024 being the final year of excavation). This isthmus of land is packed with so much history but don't overlook the Ness if you are nearby.
Skara Brae | Ancient Village or Settlement | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 15th Jul 2015 | 5 | 5 | 4 | Absolutely stunningly preserved settlement, down to the stone dressers, hearths, sleeping quarters . . . a shame one of the houses is sealed off but there's enough to keep you occupied for an hour. It can get very busy though.
Maes Howe | Chambered Cairn | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 16th Jul 2015 | 5 | 5 | 4 | Make sure to book early as the limited numbers allowed in the Howe at one time might mean it's several days before you can find a slot. Our guide was blind, but clearly knew every inch of the site and it was only when she told us this that it became apparent she was using muscle memory and perhaps a... Read More |

Cuween Hill | Chambered Cairn | Scotland | Orkney | Visited | 16th Jul 2015 | 5 | 5 | 2 | A gem of a site, this is like a miniature Maes Howe. Not much room inside and very dark. There's a torch you can borrow but no guarantee the batteries will be any good so you might want to take your own. There are lots of details you will miss in the dark.
Avebury | Stone Circle | England | Wiltshire | Visited | 5th May 2016 | 4 | 5 | 5 | Having visited Avebury numerous times I've chosen the date when I last visited, which was already seven years ago. Mitchell's Fold | Stone Circle | England | Shropshire | Visited | 23rd Jun 2018 | 3 | 4 | 3 | I first visited Mitchell's Fold in the summer of 2007 when a great deal of the countryside was closed down by foot-and-mouth disease. There were guys in white plastic overalls in the nearest town. Stern signs warned against it, but we snuck onto the site anyway. If there had been any animals we coul... Read More |

Flag Fen Visitors Centre | Museum | England | Cambridgeshire | Visited | 21st Apr 2023 | 3 | 3 | 4 | It's a little bit disappointing to be honest, though I liked the replica huts and the actual causeway remains, constantly kept wet to try and slow down the rot. Although the painted walls are a bit crudely rendered they do a good job of showing how the preserved wooden stakes would have intersected ... Read More |

Castlerigg | Stone Circle | England | Cumbria | Visited | 22nd Apr 2023 | 5 | 5 | 5 | I visited for the first time on my way back south from the Orkney Islands in 2015. Brimham Rocks | Rock Outcrop | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 22nd Apr 2023 | 5 | 5 | 3 | Rather a grey damp day, hence the site was a bit slippy. Little Meg | Stone Circle | England | Cumbria | Visited | 23rd Apr 2023 | 3 | 4 | 4 | A logical next visit after a tour of the magnificent Long Meg, which I had been dying to visit for so many years. It's a spectacular site and several minutes walk to circumambulate, glancing over to the outlier, Long Meg, ever... Read More |

Maiden Castle (Dorset) | Hillfort | England | Dorset | Visited | 27th Jun 2023 | 4 | 5 | 3 | Had the site pretty much to myself. It was a fine day but windy. When you're at the top of the site it is difficult to gauge the scale of the ramparts and other defences, but it is immense. A whole village could easily have existed up there.
Cerne Abbas Giant | Hill Figure or Geoglyph | England | Dorset | Visited | 27th Jun 2023 | 4 | 2 | 5 | Viewed from the tourist car park it is a bit disappointing: you can't necessarily make out the whole outline of this chalk giant. When I get my helicopter license I'll have a better look. But if you're nearby it's worth a quick look-see.
Grey Wethers. | Stone Circle | England | Devon | Couldn't find | 3rd Jul 2023 | I found Fernworthy S.C. easily enough but just couldn't seem to find Greywethers.
