Log Text: There is an information board about the medieval castle on the footpath approach from Crete Road West, but I don't think it mentions any Iron Age archaeology. Very nice spot overlooking Folkestone and English Channel. Popular with picnicking families, people out for a stroll etc.

Chestnuts

Chestnuts submitted by enkidu41 on 8th Apr 2004. The stones are massive (the 2 capstones and some uprights weigh up to 10 tons) and once formed a rectangular chamber 12' long and 7' high entered through a facade of sarsen stones. The owner will suggest you try dowsing rods. Do so, because you will be able to trace out the full extent of the chamber and long gone mound. TQ 652 592

Ffostyll North Chambered Long Barrow

Ffostyll North Chambered Long Barrow submitted by Johnny on 4th Jul 2002. Ffostill North Chambered Long Barrow, Powys (SO 179 349): Ffostyll North is slightly the larger of the two barrows in this field. It lies east to west and has two or three chambers. The main one, at the eastern end is ruinous. There was a small chamber in the centre of the northern side of the barrow and possibly a third chamber at the western end.

Log Text: As previously mentioned by other visitors, the farmer was very friendly and helpful. I came at the wrong time of year as the barrows were both overgrown with lots of nettles which obscured the features.

Five Knolls

Five Knolls submitted by Creative Commons on 1st Mar 2012. Five Barrows (Tumuli) located on the northernmost end of the Dunstable Downs. The four closest barrows date to between 2000 and 1800BC. The furthest one on the left of the path is older, dating to around 2200BC. Unfortunately, the proximity to the town of Dunstable has left these ancient monuments open to abuse and a cycle track runs across the four on the right.
