Lousyberry Wood Tumuli submitted by Brian_Eyes on 29th Dec 2017. View from Lousyberry Wood, these early Medieval people were continuing the prehistoric tradition of choosing beautiful views for their burial places.

Log Text: Possibly important to note that Kent Archaeology dates these barrows to the Anglo-Saxon period so not prehistoric.

I had my chauffeur waiting so I couldn't explore properly, in my short visit it was difficult to count the barrows as it looked like some may have had trenches cut through the top of them, dividing them in two. also trenches to the side of them and what looked like half of one (or two) barrows had been cut away revealing what might possibly be a layer of chalk rubble used in the construction of the barrow (or it might just occur naturally there).

The location is atmospheric, high on a hill with wind whistling though the trees and intimations of mortality despite a nearby house and some rubbish strewn around.

Knocking Knoll submitted by bec-zog on 21st Jan 2004. Knocking Knoll Barrow : near Pegsdon. On county border. Partially damaged by ploughing. TL13323104
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: On a high exposed hill with particularly long views to E and W. What remains of the barrow is quite circular but long, more tapering west facing side and ploughed field just behind the East side suggest it could originally have been elongated along E-W axis.
Apparently the barrow straddles the border between Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire which could be the reason that the E end is more ploughed out.
Historic England website records it as a bowl barrow, but the Pastscape website suggests that it is a long barrow that has been damaged by ploughing.
