Log Text: These stones are loosely set into the upper part of a deep peat deposit and cannot therefore be of prehistoric date. The most likely interpretation is that they are post-medieval boundary markers, perhaps indicating the extent of proposed peat cutting.

Visited: Yes on 11th Jun 2019. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 3

St Ninian's Isle submitted by pab on 17th Nov 2006. St Ninian’s Isle lies off the western coast of the most southerly part of the Shetland Mainland. It is linked to the mainland by a beautiful stretch of sand (called a tombola), which locals advised us would only be covered by the sea in extreme storms every decade or so. It is an absolutely wonderful place.
St Ninian’s Isle was the site of a valuable find of a hoard of ecclesiastical silver-ware in July 1958, and it was also found to have been in use through the Iron and Bronze ages.

Loch of Houlland submitted by pab on 28th Oct 2006. The broch at the Loch of Houlland is one of about 120 around the coast of Shetland. It is very close to the lighthouse at Echaness, which must have some of the most spectacular sea scenery in the UK. It would be hard to improve on the description given in the very informative guide I used in Shetland (written by Peter Guy: Walking the Coastline of Shetland, ISBN:1904746179) - "The broch dominates a small promontory which juts out from the NW into the loch. It is an impressive ruin with walls on ...
