Fernworthy stone row SE
Date Added: 14th Jan 2018
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 28th Apr 2013. My rating: Condition 1 Ambience 3 Access 4
Fernworthy stone row SE submitted by SandyG on 28th Sep 2014. Tiny stones protruding through the turf make this row difficult to photograph. A useful reminder however that many rows include stones which would have required very little effort to move and raise. This does not detract from their significance although it is perhaps remarkable that they have survived so well for so long.

Glasscombe Ball North
Date Added: 29th Jan 2019

Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 9th Mar 2013. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 2
Glasscombe Ball North submitted by SandyG on 29th Sep 2014. A line of prostrate granite slabs protruding through dead molinia does not offer a great photographic opportunity. One day I will return with my pole and see if I can improve on this offering. The fact that no stones remain standing strongly supports the idea that they have been deliberately felled. View from the north east with the terminal cairn on the skyline.

Green Hill - Stall Moor submitted by SandyG on 29th Jul 2013. The row meandering up the hillslope at SX 6368 6631. View from the south. This length of row clearly refutes the idea that the Dartmoor rows are always straight.

Log Text: This has never been an easy row to get to. When visited in 2013 car parking was available at SX 62524 61120. Recently (2016) this car parking area has been closed making it much more difficult to access this part of the moor. An alternative car parking location is at SX 64342 59548. From here the easiest way to reach the row is probably to head east to the Two Moors Way at SX 65765 59965. Then follow the track north to SX 64683 63454. From here navigate north west taking care when crossing the River Erme. Given the effort to get to the area it would be a good idea to have a look at the Hook Lake Row and if you have time the splendid one on Stalldown as well as some the amazing prehistoric settlements. Another option maybe to park at SX 60395 70806 and approach the row from the north via Crane Hill. A full day but hopefully a rewarding one. Best contemplated in the summer.

Holne Moor submitted by SandyG on 4th Oct 2014. This alignment is no less important because only small stones were selected by its builders. Visually it is certainly less spectacular but despite this it provides tangible evidence of prehistoric ritual. View from north west.

The original socket stone supports a crude modern shaft to which the original head and arms have been attached by an iron band. The shaft bears traces of tare and feather working indicating that it was produced sometime after 1800. View from north east.
