Balliscate

Balliscate submitted by Nick on 2nd Nov 2003. Isle of Mull NM499541 Park at the Mull Pottery and take the track just north of the buildings which leads west up-hill. The stones are around 400m in, on a raised platform. There are 3 stones here, the centre one being recumbent. The northern stone is the larger, being just over 2.5m in height. The row runs roughly N-S, and the southern stone is well under 2m. The central recumbent stone looks as if it would have been the largest, it's around 3m long in its current position. This is a p...

Broomend Of Crichie Stone Circle / Henge

Broomend Of Crichie Stone Circle / Henge submitted by golux on 8th Jan 2012. View looking S across the henge to stone A in the middle distance; the ditch running horizontally across the middle of the picture is the disproportionally large boundary ditch of the henge. This ditch has breaks on the S and N sides where the "avenue" passes through (the N break is partly visible above the rightmost stone) and was originally surrounded and screened from view by a high narrow outer bank. According to Bradley (2006), the entire earthwork was unstable and that the bank collapsed ...

Broomend of Crichie Avenue

Broomend of Crichie Avenue submitted by golux on 13th Jan 2012. Once there were two stone circles here, joined to one another by an avenue of paired monoliths. Of this double row or "avenue" of maybe 80 stones, only 4 survive. According to Maitland and other authorities a double line of stones about 18m apart extended from a point 450 yards south of the circle, where a number of cist burials were discovered, up to the circle and then on to a second circle (Broomend of Crichie North circle), an overall length of about 500 yards. Log Text: This is not an easy stone row to get to. Whichever way you approach it from involves walking through boggy terrain and dodging around lochans. Access from the south is relatively straightforward with the advantage that the row is visible from the start. Car parking is available at NF 83520 65827 and while you are here a visit to the nearby Barpa Langass chambered cairn is a must. From the car park carefully cross the road and walk along the verge to NF 82832 65399. From here head north avoiding the lochans. A couple of streams will need to be jumped. I would recommend wellingtons for this one. I can not overstate just how wet the ground conditions are. Assume that progress will be slow and do not set out late in the day. A decent map is essential.

Log Text: This is not an easy stone row to get to. As well as a decent map, stout footwear is a must. Progress is likely to be slow and it is a good idea to allocate a whole day and enjoy the amazing if somewhat arduous landscape that you will inevitably encounter. Parking is available at NF 84842 73473. From here walk uphill to the fence at around NF 85127 73333. Follow the fence until around NF 85794 72488 and then head towards the long cairn at NF 85684 72046. This cairn is well worth visiting and may offer an opportunity for a break before continuing towards Sgealtrabhal. Taking care to avoid the lochans you will arrive at a deep ditch which needs to be carefully crossed. From here head towards the summit. This row should only be visited when the visibility is good.
