Maen Tarw

Maen Tarw submitted by Johnny on 10th Oct 2001. Maen Tarw Standing Stone (SN 722 833) Maen Tarw standing stone is close to the Buwch a'r Llo stone pair (cf) but just within the forestry block, again adjacent to the road. It is a small block of unusual appearance, probably due to severe weathering over the years! Whatever function it originally served is no longer known but it may have, in some way, been linked to the Buwch a'r Llo pair.

The row is in the field on your left and can be seen clearly. Permission to enter the field will need to be sought locally.
Originally interpreted as a stone circle, the surviving evidence best fits the idea that this is a kerbed cairn associated with a truncated stone alignment. It has been suggested by Lynch that stones C and D “may have been moved when the monument was incorporated into a field wall” (Lynch, 1995, 56). Whilst this suggestion cannot be wholly refuted, the stones stand some distance from the former field wall and tantalisingly the form of the site is very reminiscent of the stone alignments at Lakehead Hill East and Merrivale 3, where stones of earlier stone rows had been partly incorporated into a later cairn. On balance, the lack of any evidence to support the field wall interpretation combined with the powerful parallels lends considerable support to the hypothesis that this site represents a stone alignment. Final confirmation, as with so many rows, may only be possible after excavation.

The considerable gap between the two groups of stones means that it is possible that this monument represents the remains of two separate settings. For this reason this site should properly be considered as a possible row.

Despite the problems associated with determining which stones are natural and which ones were placed it is probable that this is a stone row leading away from one of the two stone circles in this area. The presence of considerable quantities of surface stone means that without excavation it is not possible to be certain that this is a stone row.

There is a slight chance that this represents the marking out for a cross dyke, but the fact that only a very short length of ditch survives means that it is much more likely to represent a stone row.

There has been considerable confusion regarding this site over the years. Robert Knox describing the site in 1855 saw the two large stones as forming part of a double alignment than ran north to south with a further pair of stones (now destroyed) 110 yards further to north. A few years earlier in 1852 Samuel Anderson who excavated Swarth Howe claimed that the stones formed remains of a single row that extended between Swarth Howe and the cairn at NZ 84173 08932. The two additional stones found during fieldwork may lend some support to Anderson's interpretation, although both are of uncertain authenticity. On balance Anderson's interpretation is probably the more valid, but given the degree of uncertainty this row should be best considered as possible at best.
