St Piran's Cross

St Piran's Cross submitted by Thorgrim on 10th Dec 2003. Difficult to find amid the dunes of Penhale Sands, this 8 foot cross stands close to the sand-buried church of St Piran's Oratory. This is the earliest recorded stone cross in Cornwall and is dedicated to its patron saint and that of tinners and miners. Near Perranporth at SW7720 5646

Men-An-Tol submitted by cromagnonman on 6th Sep 2019. Taken on 29th August 2019. Foreground: 9 exposures of 30 seconds f/8.0 ISO 100 Sky: 300 exposures of 45 seconds f/4.0 ISO 1600 I find something magical about the process of creating a startrail picture. Sitting under the stars for three or four hours with no lights so my eyes have adjusted to the dark so well that I don't need any additional light. Gazing at the vastness of the universe, spotting meteors, satellites, aircraft, all in complete silence. I don't really sleep because ...

Boskednan stone circle

Boskednan stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The portal stones illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. The tallest one (on the left) has a diagonal groove present on this and the opposite side. The holes that the restored stones were raised from have been covered with pegged down foliage, presumably to encourage regrowth on the bare earth.

Carn Euny Fogou

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogou passage would not have obstructed the view. It is possible that the sun was meant to shine down t...

Chun Quoit

Chun Quoit submitted by sem on 16th Jun 2005. The capstone and the horizon. There is a theory that dolmens (or quoits as they are known in Cornwall) were not totally covered in earth but the capstones were left uncovered and were a copy of the horizon. I have manipulated the tones in this shot to show this, but no shapes have been altered.

Creeg Tol basin

Creeg Tol basin submitted by AngieLake on 22nd Mar 2004. This is the Creeg Tol basin (not the Giant's Footprints - they are on a big stone to the right of this). It struck me that this would be a very suitable ceremonial site, standing here, using the basin to anoint some leader (possibly?), who may have stood on the natural platform just underneath it, (lower right in pic) in sight of Boscawen Un, (top centre) and - looking down upon the tiny Creeg Tol "circle". (Out of sight, below right). The whole setting has a strange atmosphere. I almost won...
