St-Benoit polissoir  Polissoir  France  Normandie:Manche (50)  Visited  28th Jun 2005  4  4  5  I was understanding that this polissoir stone was going to be difficult to find, but thought that I'd give it a go. Luckily for me, since the source of my information was written, it's all been tidied up into a nice little area and signposted. It's about 800m from the village of St Bénoit, up the D...

Champ Dolent Menhir  Standing Stone (Menhir)  France  Bretagne:Ille-et-Vilaine (35)  Visited  28th Jun 2005  5  5  5  This is a glorious 9 metre tall shaped and sculpted granite menhir, the stone for which has been brought here from over 4 kilometres away. It stands high on a little hillock overlooking the ancient city of Dol, with the rock which has been inhabited for many thousands of years just beyond that. At i...

Menhir dit la Pierre du Domaine  Standing Stone (Menhir)  France  Bretagne:Ille-et-Vilaine (35)  Visited  28th Jun 2005  3  3  4  This menhir can be found just to the west of the road around the east of Beaufort lake, a bit to the north of the Abbey. It's in a field of wheat, but can be easily seen. I estimate it to be at least 4 metres tall.   203  601
La Maison des Feins  Passage Grave  France  Bretagne:Ille-et-Vilaine (35)  Visited  28th Jun 2005  5  5  4  This is a lovely little allée couverte, deep inside a lovely oak forest just to the east of the village of Tressé, and signposted from there. There is a parking area, and a signposted and guided walk footpath from there to find it, along with many other items of interest. The allée is about 1...

Ville Hamon Dolmen  Burial Chamber or Dolmen  France  Bretagne:Côtes-D'Armor (22)  Visited  27th Jun 2005  2  3  5  This poor thing is a bit of a mess. Difficult to find without a detailed map, but only a few dozen metres from a track, on top of a good sized mound, to the east of the town of Erquy. Celles-sur-Belle menhirs  Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature  France  Poitou:Deux-Sèvres (79)  Visited  15th May 2005  2  3  3  After a fairly long struggle to find these which are marked on my ign map I eventually found a sign pointing through the woods to menhirs 180 metres but not very close to the position on the map. The best I found was two big lumps of rock on a hillside which looked very much like they may be natural...

Pierres Folles du Follet  Standing Stones  France  Pays de la Loire:Vendée (85)  Visited  15th May 2005  4  3  5  The Pierres Folle de Follet are two large menhirs both about 3.5 metres tall positioned one each side of a little lane like giant gateposts at the hamlet of the same name just to the south of the D19 a couple of kilometres south of the village of Rosnay. There is a legend associated with them, w...

Dolmen dit La Salle des Fées  Burial Chamber or Dolmen  France  Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique  Visited  15th May 2005  3  3  4  This was not at all like I was expecting to find so either the picture I had previously seen of this is of the wrong place or else this dolmen has had a nasty accident which has increased the remains ! I have to say it looks like a jumble of large rock slabs around a few trees in the middle of a...

Prédaire Dolmen  Chambered Cairn  France  Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique  Visited  14th May 2005  2  5  4  This much ruined transepted burial mound sits on a clifftop overlooking the sea to the south of the seaside harbour town of Pornic. I had chosen to spend the night at the campsite la Boutinardière and went for an evening stroll for 20 minutes or so northwest along the Sentier des Douarniers coastal...

Joselière Dolmen  Chambered Cairn  France  Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique  Visited  14th May 2005  5  4  4  As soon as I got here this nice quiet place was flooded with people either returning from the beach or a walk along the clifftop. It is superbly positioned in a field about 50 metres from the sea but it’s a shame about the wartime gun emplacement here also. This transepted burial mound has been re...

Tumulus Des Mousseaux  Chambered Cairn  France  Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique  Visited  14th May 2005  5  3  5  This monument is signposted from all sorts of places and easy to find if approaching from the north but probably not so if coming from the south as the fortified harbour and seaside town of Pornic is a maze of small streets and indeed barred to a campervan. The tumulus is enclosed by houses and reac...

Menhir du Boivre  Standing Stone (Menhir)  France  Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique  Couldn't find  14th May 2005        This menhir is supposed to be 3.8 metes tall and nicely shaped but I could not find it. It was a nice cool lump of granite to find on this warm afternoon.  203  24
Pierre de Couche  Standing Stone (Menhir)  France  Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique  Visited  14th May 2005  3  2  4  In a little enclosure on the opposite side of the busy dual carriageway road from the campsite this stone is just over 2 metres tall in pale granite. It’s a nicely shaped stone but far too enclosed within the houses and noisy.  203  23
Les Pierres Couchées  Standing Stone (Menhir)  France  Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique  Visited  14th May 2005  2  2  5  Now incorporated into a campsite of the same name I was expecting to find a fallen menhir. Upon my return to the parking area later I found what looked to be some ancient stones right behind my camperva...

Moulin Chevalier Dolmen  Passage Grave  France  Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique  Visited  14th May 2005  4  4  3  I am not quite sure what to make of this. It is either a fairly undisturbed dolmen still well contained within its mound or else it is a bit of a wreck ! The mound is about 8 metres by 4 metres and is found down a little track left at the edge of a field but there are no signposts. There is possibly...

La Pierre de Gargantua (St Brevin)  Standing Stone (Menhir)  France  Pays de la Loire:Loire-Atlantique  Visited  14th May 2005  2  2  3  I spent nearly an hour looking for this and eventually found it after asking a local. Croix St Pierre east  Chambered Cairn  France  Bretagne:Ille-et-Vilaine (35)  Visited  13th May 2005  3  3  4  A large long mound with two large dolmenic chambers within it opening to the side and also a smaller one near one end.
